Safety of reduced antibiotic prescribing for self-limiting respiratory tract infections in primary care: cohort study using electronic health records

Delivery of an antibiotic stewardship intervention to 79 UK general practices resulted in a 12% reduction in the rate of antibiotic prescribing for patients with self-limiting respiratory tract infections. There was no identifiable effect on the incidence of 11 serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia, peritonsillar abscess, mastoiditis, etc.
