Antibiotic use and bacterial complications following upper respiratory tract infections: a population-based study

There was a 22% reduction in the dispensing of antibiotics used principally for treatment of respiratory tract infections (mostly phenoxymethylpenicillin, doxycycline and amoxicillin) in Stockholm County between 2006 and 2015. There was no associated increase in the rate of hospitalisation for: mastoiditis, meningitis, peritonsillar abscess, invasive Group A streptococcal disease, sinusitis, orbital abscess, etc.
