Antibiotic prescribing for discoloured sputum in acute cough/lower respiratory tract infection

This study of 3,402 adults with acute cough in 13 countries found that patients whose acute cough was associated with coloured sputum were three times more likely to be prescribed an antibiotic. However, neither patients with coloured sputum, nor patients with clear sputum had any clinical benefit from antibiotic treatment.
